Mid Block

A defensive shape positioned around halfway, controlling central space without committing forward.

The mid-block is the most common defensive shape in modern football: a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 holding around the halfway line, denying central progression while staying organised enough to counter-attack into the space the opposition vacates.

Mid-blocks favour teams that want to control the game without being open to counters. They're less risky than a high press and more proactive than a low block. The trigger to press up depends on opposition cues — a back-pass, a heavy first touch, or the ball reaching a known weak passer.
