Low Block

A compact defensive shape held deep, denying space behind and forcing play wide.

0 articles

A low block sees the defending team retreat into a compact 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 shape inside its own third, sacrificing territory to deny space between the lines and behind the back four. The objective is to invite the opponent forward, then frustrate them into wide areas or low-quality shots from distance.

Low blocks are typically used by underdogs against superior opposition, or by elite teams managing late-game leads. They demand discipline more than skill: holding the line, resisting the urge to step out, and accepting that the team will see little of the ball.
